The shaped crestrail above nine spindles held in place by a U-shaped armrail terminating in knuckled grips over baluster-turned supports above a shaped seat, on baluster and ring-turned legs joined by a swelled H-stretcher, the entire surface painted black with gilt highlights--38¼in. high

Lot Essay

With its oval seat with blunted pummel and distinctive turnings, this chair is characteristic of the type of sack-back windsor chair which was being crafted in Philadelphia during the last quarter of the 18th century.
