DID THE REPUBLICANS CHEAT IN LINCOLN'S 1864 PRESIDENTIAL ELECTION?
Gatling has read an article sent by Love "which gives an account of how the rights of citizens were trampled upon by the lawless soldiers at the October election, in Indianapolis, of 1864. I can't understand how the Republicans can deny the truth of history and what thousands saw with their own eyes. It is however, fortunate that there are hundreds living whose evidence has, and can, substantiate the fact the soldiers did at the election...mob and drive Democrats from the polls, and that the soldiers did vote, against all law and justice. I hope such scenes may never again occur, but they will occur, unless the people stand up manfully for their rights.....[Y]ou know all the facts....In business matters, I am getting along about as usual. Hard times, however, seem to effect every body...." He comments on a bill to make gold the monetary standard: "I do hope the West and the South will stand up for Bond's Silver Bill. It is to the interest of the Bondholders to have nothing but gold as legal money; but this will be death to the taxpayers and business men of the country....."
In the 1864 elections, Lincoln won 55.09 of the popular vote to McClellan's 44.91 but the popular vote in some key states was quite close. There were many accusations of unfair practices; at some polling places, pro-Lincoln soldiers were reported to have prevented "peace" Democrats and McClellan supporters from voting.
