LINCOLN, ABRAHAM, President. Engraved document signed in full as President, countersigned by Secretary of War Edwin M. Stanton, and endorsed at top by Lorenzo Thomas, Washington, D.C., 21 February 1862. 1 page, large folio, 440 x 348 mm. (17 5/16 x 13 3/4 in.), ON FINE PARCHMENT, elaborately engraved, blue paper seal of the United States at upper left, bold heading at top "The President of the United States," beneath which an American Eagle and the "E Pluribus Unum" motto, large vignette of crossed flags, cannons and other military paraphenalia at bottom, with small legend "Engraved by J. V .N. and C. H. Throop, Washn. City," accomplished in manuscript, the portions supplied by a clerk in manuscript slightly pale, but the signatures of Stanton and Lincoln (in different inks) are dark. A SURGEON'S APPOINTMENT confirming that U.G. Palmer carries the rank of Brigade Surgeon of Volunteers.
