LINCOLN PERMITS A DESERTER TO RETURN TO HIS REGIMENT

Todd writes Lincoln on behalf of Charles Wallace, "who deserted the service in October 1856," and now seeks a Presidential pardon. Todd asserts that, "I have known Charles Wallace...for three years, without knowing that he was a deserter....[He] has conducted himself with great propriety...is a hard working, industrious man...." Lincoln, having considered the appeal, writes: "If Charles Wallace will join his Regiment to serve out his term, this shall be his pardon, for the desertion mentioned...." The letter carries additional endorsements by various officers. The Regimental Surgeon, who examined Wallace at Camp Hutchinson, Dakota Territory, records that Wallace is "unfit for military duty" due to an injury to one finger, requiring amputation. Lincoln's endorsement is in a bold hand, in dark ink. Not in Collected Works, or Supplements.
