'URNE A L'AIGLE', AN IMPORTANT ETCHED, ENAMELED AND GILT GLASS VASE
BY DAUM, 1892, FOR THE UNIVERSAL EXPOSITION OF CHICAGO, 1893
Of hour-glass form with rich salmon-colored ground shading to deep red, etched and elaborately enameled in colors of cream, umber, slate gray and burgundy, depicting an eagle with wings outspread, between a top border intricately enameled with storks holding snakes in their beaks and fleur de lys, a lower band enameled with alternating bats and stylized japanese chrysanthemum blossoms against a fretwork ground, heightened allover with gilding, enameled DAUM NANCY--11 3/4in. (30cm.) high
The maquette for this design is illustrated in Daum, Maitres Verriers by Noel Daum, p. 41. Apparently this was one of the first major pieces developed under the management of Antonin Daum, and was designed not as a utilitarian object, but as a work of art.
cf. Noel Daum, Daum, Maitres Verriers, Edition De Noël, 1980, p.41; Le Lyricism de la Nature L'Exposition de Oeuvre en Verre de Daum, Tokyo, 1993, p.43, fig. 9; Art Nouveau, L'Ecole de Nancy, De Noël et Serpenoix, 1987, p.123 illustrates the model on exhibit at the 1893 Chicago Exposition.
