A LUSTRED TWO-HANDLED CUP
GUBBIO, CIRCA 1530-1540

Of cylindrical form with scroll handles, raised on a flaring foot, lustred in gold and ruby and painted in blue and green on a white ground, the straight sides with concave ovals within acanthus surrounds, the lower body with triangles and dots radiating from a scale-pattern wreath, the foot with similar spiraling decoration, the underside inscribed in red with Sackler number 79.5.15 (crack behind one handle restored, restored chips to edge of handles, glaze chips relustred and repainted, test drill holes to footrim) --8½in. (21.6cm.) high, 10 3/8in. (26.4cm.) wide overall

Lot Essay

The present cup is from a group of shaped and moulded wares potted and decorated at Gubbio which are inspired by contemporary pieces from Deruta. The pinkish cast to the tin glaze is also tyical of production at this center reknowned for its lustred decoration. Cf. Rackham, Catalogue, (V&A), nos. 509-511
