Painted on a white ground in shades of yellow, green, blue, manganese and ochre, the domed cover and knop finial with angels cavorting in the sky, the slightly flaring neck with The Adoration, the stem and flaring foot with winged putti sitting on pedestals within a bower of flowers, one playing a violin, the other a lute, signed GENTILI P. 1747, the underside inscribed in red with Sackler number 79.6.23B, the flange of the cover inscribed 79.6.23A (restorations, test drill holes to flange of cover and to footrim)--24 1/8in. (61.2cm.) high

Sold with thermoluminescence certificate 381u88 dated May 1986 from the Research Laboratory for Archaeology and the History of Art, Oxford University, stating that the sample tested was last fired between 150 and 240 years ago (1746-1836).
