Lot Essay

In the foreword of the catalogue accompanying the 1972 Norwich exhibition, the artist's widow, Barbara, writes that Carr 'rapidly found his greater interest in Man and Machines. He used to go and study, making quick drawings of men working on tractors, or of any pieces of machinery whose shapes, together with the shapes of the men who were handling them, gave him inspiration. This he did at the garage nearby and carried them out afterwards in oil colours on canvas'.
