Lot Essay
'The sense of inside and outside is a major theme of Turnbull's recent sculpture ... The inside/outside theme recurs throughout Turnbull's work, from the 'pliable skin' of the Masks through the apertures of Source and Trojan, the removed segments revealing the insides of ovoids (often the Lotus, opening to reveal its own interior), the early Gates, and the enclosing Duct ... it is continued in such sculptures as Steps 1967-72, which encloses space as well as being a form cut into, rather in the manner of the later Sungazer heads: and Gate 1972.
Turnbull's sculpture of and since the late 1960s shows a marked reduction of applied colour. Where sculptures are painted, particularly low-keyed colours are used, but most of the work simply exposes the material of which it is constructed' (R. Morphet, loc. cit.).
