Lot Essay

The spine of the binding is decorated in the characteristic manner of the binder of very many books in the Pembroke Library. "Although this library of 6787 printed books and 252 manuscripts does not rank with the largest collections of the eighteenth century, the choice of books and the organization of the catalogue make it important...The separate listing of octavo Aldines and of the duodecimo Elzevirs suggests that collectors were already searching for them in 1720."--Taylor, p. 246. The Royal Library at Vienna bought the entire collection.
