After working through a post-Impressionist style, Auguste Herbin took a studio in the Bateau-Cavoin in 1909 and joined the Cubists. By 1917 he had taken ? the flattened, colorful forms of synthetic ? to pure abstraction. He exhibited at Léonces Rosenberg's Galerie L'Effort Moderne from 1917, and his style during the 1920s combines cubist elements with pure abstraction. In 1931 he helped found the Abstract-Crétion association. During this period his paintings contain organic shapes move away from geometric abstraction to include more ? , organic forms. After World War II he returned to ? geometric forms, making extensive use of Goethe's color theories.
