A BEECHWOOD AND LAMINATED WOOD STOOL
DESIGNED BY OTTO WAGNER AND PRODUCED BY THE FIRM OF THONET, FOR THE MAIN BANKING HALL OF THE IMPERIAL AUSTRIAN POSTAL SAVINGS BANK (ÖSTERREICHISCHE POSTSPARKASSE),VIENNA, CIRCA 1906

The square curved seat with central cut-out handhold and
pierced holes around, set into a square beechwood frame with rounded edges, supported by four similiar open square frames, joined by aluminium studs--18 1/2in. (47cm.) high, 16 1/2in x 16 1/2in.(42cm. x42cm.) square

Sixty-five stools of this model were produced by Thonet for the interior of the main Banking Hall in 1906. The building was home to more then 2700 postal employees. Iron, glass, marble and aluminium were the dominant materials used in this modernist vision of architecture.

The main Banking Hall was one of the most frequented areas of the new building. It was decorated in white, silver, grey and black colors.
The floor was inlaid with glass bricks, therby allowing natural light to filter into the postal offices below.
The interior of the main hall was furnished with thirty built-in tellers. Four standing-desks were placed in the center of the hall, surrounded with four side-stools on either side.
