AN EDO SHIMOSAKA (EDO YASUTSUGU) KATANA
EARLY EDO PERIOD (CIRCA 1680), SIGNED [ORIKAESHI-MEI], (AOI-MON) YASUTSUGU OITE NAMBAN TETSU [YASUTSUGU IV].

Sugata: with shinogi-zukuri, iori-mune and chu-kissaki; nagasa: 2 shaku, 1 sun, 5.5 bu (65.2 cm.); sori: koshi-zori of 1.6 cm. Jihada: compacted itame with scattered nie-deki. Hamon: wide Sadamune-style gonome midare in nioi and extensive ko-nie and with sunagashi along the majority of the length; in the upper half of the blade, the tempering becomes more exagerated and reaches the shinogi-ji in spots. Boshi: midare-komi. Nakago keitai: suriage (approximately 9 cm.) and with a soft, brown patina; yasurime: indistinct; mekugi-ana: three; mei, katana-mei: (orikaeshi-mei), [Aoi-mon] Yasutsugu oite/Namban tetsu. Shirasaya; storage bag.

Yasutsugu IV, also known as Ichinojo Yasutsugu, was the son of Yasutsugu II whose brother, Shirozaemon Yasutsugu, had assumed the title of Yasutsugu III.
