FIRST AMERICAN EDITION, with early issue points: "was" for "saw" on p. 57, line 23; the "Him and another Man" plate listed in the list of illustrations as being on p. 88; state 1 (2?) of pagination on p. 155 with the final "5" lacking; the title-leaf a cancel; state 3 of p. 283 (the leaf is a cancel); state 1 of portrait frontispiece (tablecloth visible); final leaf blank.
