Lot Essay

This drawing is related to a lost composition by Giovanni Bellini of Christ and the Woman taken in Adultery, known through a copy formerly attributed to Cariani, R. Pallucchini and F. Rossi, Giovanni Cariani, Bergamo, 1983, no. A59. A drawing in the same technique for two figures to the right of Christ is in the Lugt Collection, Byam Shaw, op. cit., I, no. 217, III, pl. 249. The Lugt drawing is of high quality and clearly by Bellini. The present sheet, though evidently related to the two figures to the left of Christ, is presumably a copy by a studio hand after a lost original by the Master
