Lot Essay

While the character of this head, presumably of a Saint in a Sacra Conversazione, is ultimately Bellinesque, the clear modelling is closer to such followers as Marco Basaiti and Bartolommeo Veneto. The drawing is one of relatively few in the style of the early cinquecento that can be traced back to the Sagredo-Borghese Collection, which was so rich in studies by Veronese and other Venetian artists of the following generations
