Lot Essay
This previously unattributed drawing is a study for the figure on the left side of The Nativity of the Virgin of around 1599, originally in the basilica of Santa Maria, Loreto and now in the Louvre, D. Posner, Annibale Carracci, London, 1971, no. 110, illustrated. The painting was commissioned for the Cantucci Chapel, built to commemorate Francesco Cantucci, first Bishop of Loreto who died in 1586.
