Lot Essay

Possibly a primo pensiero for Coriolano's chiaroscuro woodcut (Illustrated Bartsch, 48, no. 4 (88)). The print differs from the drawing in a number of ways, must notably the position of her right arm and the addition of a putti. The connection with the print is tentative as Reni's known studies for Coriolano's woodcuts are in pen and ink, H. McBurney and N. Turner, Drawings by Guido Reni for woodcuts by Bartolonneo Coriolano, Print Quarterly, 1988, V, pp. 227-42
