Lot Essay

A preliminary study probably for the painting of the mid-1620s in the Dayton Art Institute, Ohio, A. Emiliani, I Dipinti del Guercino, Rome, 1988, no. 111, illustrated. Sir Denis Mahon believes that the Dayton painting is an autograph, or shop version with differences of an earlier lost painting of about 1620, a study for which is in the Palazzo Bianco, Genova. As the present drawing includes elements of both compositions, it is difficult to judge for which of the two this is preparatory. The verso is a fine, early example of Guercino's landscape style
