Lot Essay

Mary Newcome Schleier kindly confirmed the attribution, and suggests that the study on the recto is related to a lost work by Benso. A squared octagonal study for this was inscribed on the verso 'Giulio Benso l'opera e nel Chiastro di St. Domn', Sotheby's, New York, 20 January 1982, lot 54
