With the Madonna cradling the Child and holding both feet with her right hand, her veil falling across her breast, His left hand grasping the Madonna's left thumb, the Madonna looking slightly downwards to sinister, with brass tag bearing inscription 'JACOPO DELLA QUERCIA' (chips, losses to polychroming)-33in. (84cm.) high, 25in. (64cm.) wide, on a polychrome-painted stepped rectangular base-45in. (114cm.) high, 29in. (74cm.) wide, 11in. (28cm.) deep

Lot Essay

The present relief is closely related to a fine terracotta version sold at Sotheby's London, December 10, 1987, lot 161. The major difference, the clasp which secures the Madonna's cloak, is not present in the terracotta example.
