aquatint and engraving with hand-coloring and touches of gum arabic, 1830, on wove paper, presumably sixth (final) state, published by Currier and Ives, after 1857, with trimmed margins, surface losses and nicks showing mostly at bottom, pale staining and foxing showing mostly in the margins, a few small tears and paper losses at the margin edges, staining and skinning on the reverse

Lot Essay

The original copperplate for this print, currently in a private collection, bears the Currier and Ives publishers line. Therefore, this would seem to be the final state. Deak records only five previous states and notes that Currier and Ives also produced a lithograph based on Bennett's design.
