Lot Essay
This table is nearly identical to a table labled by George Woodruff of New York City. Woodruff worked at 54 John Street, the location listed on the lable, from 1808 until 1810, after which he moved but remained in New York until 1816. This two year bracket provides a context and time frame for this above table. Woodruff notes in his label that he takes orders from "in the city or from the country." The labeled table may be an example of Woodruff's export furniture, which was often labeled as a marketing device, whereas, the furniture made for local use was not. Hence it is possible that because of their similarity, the table above could be a Woodruff table made for the local clientele. See Montgomery, American Furniture (New York, 1966), fig. 331.
