The present example has been authenticated as Wedgwood by Gaye Blake-Roberts, The Wedgwood Museum, Burslem, Etruria---She notes that "complete conceits are not common and they do not normally survive in such good condition". As indicated in the drawing of shape 419 in The First Shapes Book, a scrolling ribbon should outline the surface of lower tier.

Conceits were used as table decoration during the late 18th and early 19th century when flour was in short supply. They were designed to simulate elaborate confectionary.
