The sitter was born in 1765, the daughter of John Chichester of Arlington and Calverleigh, Devonshire and his second wife, Mary, daughter of Major Donald McDonald. At an early age, probably soon after the present portrait was painted in 1789, she became a nun at Liège where she died in 1791
