Enamelled in the center with the arms of Hanbury with Comyn in pretence, the rim decorated with a leafy grapevine in gilt between bands of cell diaper pattern (small areas touched up on the underside rim, rim slightly bevelled)--9in. (23cm.) diam.

Lot Essay

This service was made for John Hanbury (1700-58), a London Quaker with vast tobacco lands in Maryland and Virginia, and a director of the South Sea Company. See Howard, op. cit., pp. 122 and 265, and Gordon, Collecting Chinese Export Porcelain, p. 32.
