This work is one of eight sculptures which La Fresnaye executed in 1910 when he was preocupied with the human form. At this time he worked under August Maillol at the Grand Chaumière, the famous sculpture atelier, where he also made the acquaintance of Bourdelle, and, more important for his future developement, became friendly with young Raymond Duchamp-Villon, already a convinced Cubist.
