Lot Essay

The attribution was first suggested by Roeland Kollewijn. The composition recalls a fresco painted by Ademollo in the Villa Davanzati, Florence and a series of engravings after his designs in the Museo Teatrale alla Scala, Milan. It is particularly close to the engraving of 1794 done by Ademollo after his own drawing of 1788 for the safety curtain of the Teatro della Pergola in Florence, which showed charioteers racing around an obelisk
