In 1795 the Place Louis XVI was renamed the Place de la Concorde, the bridge was embellished with twelve statues of Great Men in 1827, and an obelisk was erected in 1836 under the direction of the architect J.I. Hittorff. In 1834, the Place de la Concorde was selected as the location for the ninth exhibition of 'the Products of French Industry', which inspired Hector Horeau to produce a series of designs for temporary structures to be erected for the exhibition.

Unfortunately, despite his active pursuit of potential patrons, Horeau was unable to interest anybody in his designs, a fate which much of his prolific output of projects and writings suffered
