Lot Essay

A closely related set of candlesticks were sold by the Trustees of the Richard Ormonde Shuttleworth Remembrance Trust in these Roooms, 10 June 1993, lots 13-15. Evolved from Louis XVI pattern candelabra, such as those published by Jean-Louis Prieur in the 1760's, they relate to the oeuvre of the Roman goldsmith Giuseppe Valadier (d. 1817) and his workshop (see: A. González-Palacios, Il Tempio del Gusto, Milan, 1984, p. 122, fig. 265)
