Of oblong form, the base and hinged cover chased with paterae with engine-turned reserves, the sides chased with trailing acorns and leaves, the cover chased with a classical battle scene, engraved inside cover with a monogram and 1835, marked on interior base and cover --3¼in.(8.3cm.) long

Lot Essay

David Hockly entered his first mark as a smallworker in 1810; subsequently he was in partnership with Thomas Bosworth. In 1819 he emigrated to Cape Town where he carried on business as a silversmith. He made the head of a staff of office presented to Andries Waterboer, Chief of the Grinquas in 1834. He died at Graaff-Reinet in 1835.
