Born in 1705, in 1754 he changed his name to Hampden in compliance with the will of his kinsman, John Hampden, whose estates he inherited. He was ambassador to the Hague from 1739 to 1746. He died in 1783. In his obituary in the Gentleman's Magazine, it is stated that "his collection of drawings and prints is indisputably one of the choicest in England."
