Of globular form, the body engraved with strapwork and scrolls with oval reserves enclosing portrait busts, leaf-clad scroll spout and raffia-covered overhead scroll handle issuing from stylized shells, the hinged cover surmounted by a wood baluster finial, the stand on three acanthus scroll feet, with central circular burner and cover, the scroll openwork apron chased with masks, the side engraved with a coat-of-arms, the stand and lamp cover engraved with two crests, marked under base, on cover and lamp, also struck with later control marks--overall height 13in.(33cm.)

Lot Essay

The arms are those of Stephens quarterly with those of Lyne as borne by Charles Lyne of Devonshire Place and Weymouth, who in 1826, assumed the surname of Lyne-Stephens.
