REVIVALIST ENAMEL AND YELLOW GOLD PENDANT LOCKET
Designed as a varicolored enamel miniature depicting a classical female figure within a yellow gold bead and wirework frame,in a fitted case Probably by Eugene Fontenay
Eugene Fontenay (1823-1887) was one of the most knowledgeable craftsmen in France during the Second Empire (last half of the 19th century). At the same time as Castellani's house in Italy, he produced jewelry of antique and classical themes using pearls, lapis lazuli, coral and other precious materials. He was also very interested in the art of enamelling and its rediscovery lost since the 16th and 17th century. With the collaboration of Eugene Richet, a painter and miniaturist, he made a series of jewels with an unusual matte-finish enamel apparently imitating Roman wall paintings and depicting Greek mythology personages.
He won a medal for his 'bijoux' Campana at the Exposition Universelle in 1867
