Lot Essay

This grisaille was published as a full-page plate in Edwin Lord Weeks' book,From the Black Sea Through Persia and India (N.Y., 1895, London, 1896), p. 311, from the section "Notes on Indian Art." This book was an illustrated narrative of Weeks' last major expedition, in 1892-93, but includes aspects of earlier expeditions. The grisaille is datable to 1894.
