JOE SIMON
Captain America No. 1, 1993
Born 10/11/13 in Rochester N.Y., Joe Simon quickly found a home in the fledgling comic book industry. Armed with a unique combination of creative brillance and savvy, Simon quickly rose to the position of editor at Timely Publications which is now Marvel Comics. Confronted with the task of creating a new series of books, Simon looked to the war in Europe for the ultimate villain, Adolph Hitler. Recognizing that the time was right for a patriotic hero, Simon, aided by the unparalleled artistry of Jack Kirby presented Captain America, sending a vivid message of freedom to Hitler's jaw, as the cover of Captain America Comics No. 1 in March of 1941. Simon and Kirby went on to co-create numerous characters for several companies over the succeeding two decades, but it is Captain America that remains the pinnacle of their accomplishments. Acrylic on board--17½ x 12¼ inches. Note: This art is scheduled to be used as a poster by Marvel Comics in 1995.
