Lot Essay
This Chippendale armchair is closely related to a group of chairs which were made in Philadelphia between 1740-1760. A side-chair made and signed by William Savery, with a nearly identical high straight-sided plinth on the splat and scrolled apron, is illustrated and discussed in American Antiques from Israel Sack Collection, vol. II, (Washington, D.C., 1965), p. 432, no. 1077. This side-chair retains its original leather seat.
