THE DOORS
A REMO Weather King drumhead, circa 1970. On the rim Professional Drum Shop, Inc. Hand-painted over pencil outline in black paint on the upper left hand side THE, upper case, small type; doors, lower case, large type. The drumskin was especially made for the band's television appearance, and was the only instance where the band's name appeared on the bass drum. On television station WNET-TV in New York City in 1970 Jim Morrison and The Doors performed "Light My Fire" as musical guests on the Joey Bishop Show. At the end of the song, Morrison grabbed an extra drumstick from John Densmore and snapped the drum causing a break in the skin; a jagged hairline crack appears above and through the lettering.
The television appearance and drum head breaking was photographed by Frank Lisciandro and can be seen in "An Hour For Magic", a photojournal published by Delilah Books, 1982. Nathan Sark, sometimes roadie and fellow musician/poet was an early member of The Doors offshoot group The Manzarek Brothers. Upon The Doors return to their Hollywood rehearsal studio, Morrison gave the drumskin to Sark. A letter of authenticity from Nathan Sark accompanies the lot--21 in. in diameter.
