Lot Essay

Sir Tatton Sykes (1772-1863) was one of the leading racehorse owners and breeders of his day. He was an expert boxer and was described in the Dictionary of National Biography as an 'an admirable example of the country landed proprietor, devoting all his time to agriculture, stock-breeding, and fox-hunting.' He succeeded his brother in 1823 as fourth baronet and took up his residence at Sledmere, Yorkshire.
