Lot Essay

We are grateful to Marijke C. de Kinkelder of the Rijksbureau voor Kunsthistorische Dokumentatie for suggesting the attribution on the basis of a photograph. She compares the present picture to a signed picture in the Boymans-Van Beuningen Museum in Rotterdam (no.1945) and to a work of 1630, sold in these Rooms, 20 Feb. 1986, lot 248. We are also grateful to Willem van der Watering for suggesting the same attribution independently. He compares the picture in addition to the small circular panel sold in these Rooms, 15 Feb. 1974, lot 9 and on stylistic grounds to the picture representing Christ and the Woman taken in Adultery, also dated 1630, which was in the Leo C. Collins collection, New York, in 1946
