We are grateful to Willem van de Watering for his assistance in cataloguing this lot which he believes may be an autograph work by Steen and for pointing out that 'Hofstede de Groot's description of the painting is not accurate. In his author's copy of the original German edition he wrote down the following corrective text, apparently based on autopsy of the original catalogue . "Vor einem Haus sind mehrere Personen miteinander, von denen scheinbar zwei miteinander raufen wollen"'
