Lot Essay

Hu Baik-Ryun was born in Jin Do and studied painting with Mi San Hu from 1900-05. He went to Kwang Sin University from 1905-08 and also studied at the Ki Cho School in 1910. From 1912-13 he attended Ritsumeikan University in Japan, and studied Chinese-style painting under Komura Suiun (1874-1945) an important late nanga painter who worked in a rich, decorative manner.

In 1922 the artist won second prize at the first "Cho Sun" art exhibition in Korea. He exhibited his work with that of Kim Eun-Ho (1892-1979) at the Sin Se Kye Gallery in Seoul in 1932. During the years 1932-70 he had regular one-person exhibitions in Seoul and was the recipient of the Ye Sul Won Prize.
