1930 SUNBEAM 16.9HP COUPE
Registration No. WX 4866
Chassis No. 5387/L
Engine No. 5292/L
Cream with black wings and hood with brown leather interior
Engine: six cylinder, overhead valve, 2,035cc, 44bhp at 4,000rpm; Gearbox: four speed manual; Brakes: four wheel drum; Suspension: semi-elliptic. Right hand drive.
The Sunbeam Motor Car Company began to operate in 1905 having been associated with bicycles and japanning since 1902. It quickly expanded and what with racing success, by 1913 was a thriving business. After the war the four cylinder 16 and 24 six were built at a rate of 20 a week and in 1920 the company amalgamated with Talbot, Darracq and others to become STD Motors Ltd.
Racing and record breaking consumed much time and money, particularly at Sunbeam, which made some road going sports models, but was best known for attractive, well-made and refined touring cars, and not suprisingly the company became unable to meet some of its commitments. Production of four cylinder cars ended in 1927 and the straight eights and double overhead cam six cylinder models were discontinued in 1930.
This highly original car has changed hands only once in its lifetime. Its first owner kept the car until 1965. The car was last used in the late 1980s and appeared in the TV series "The Bretts". Originality and patina of age give this Sunbeam a wonderful feeling of careful ownership and limited use. The original brown leather interior is nicely worn and the paintwork has crazed with age. Features include helmet wings, full side valances, Lucas King of the Road headlamps, opening windscreen and adjustable vent, rear foot wells and cord grab handles. Sunbeam were always greatly respected for their solid and reliable engineering experience and this two-light Sunbeam coupe body is one of the most attractive produced. The 16.9hp is the most common model in the Sunbeam Club to survive with in the region of 100 still in existence, consequently it is also the best supplied for parts by the club.
This is a true vintage car, from the famous Sunbeam factory, in an original unspoilt condition with just two owners from new. It comes with both a modern V5 document and old style log book.
