WASHINGTON, GEORGE, President. Engraved document signed ("Go: Washington") as president, countersigned by Timothy Pickering, Secretary of State and William Ellery (Signer of the Declaration of Independence). N.p, [Newport, Rhode Island], 9 December 1796. One page, large folio, ON PARCHMENT, finely engraved italic text at top, "By the President of the United States," beneath a very large engraved vignette of a light-house on a rocky inlet with two sailing ships (one flying a large American flag) and a distant harbor in the background, scallop edge at top, accomplished in manuscript, papered seal of the United States at lower left, apparently cancelled(?) with a circular punch affecting 3 letters in Washington's signature, otherwise very good. A ship's passport for the ship "Patty of Bristol."
