A MONUMENTAL VICTORIAN SILVER-GILT VASE

Of vase-shaped form, on spreading circular foot chased with an egg-and-dart band below a foliate calyx on a matted ground, rising to a knopped stem, the lower body chased with flutes below a band of applied flowerheads, each side applied with an oval laurel cartouche enclosing, on one side, a scene of Odysseus at sea, and on the other, a scene of Odysseus on the Island of Lesbos, the shoulder applied with a laurel band below similar fluting, the neck with similar applied flower heads between oval bands, with everted egg-and-dart rim, the sweeping laurel scroll handles issuing from Medusa masks, and headed by lion's masks, marked on body and neck--24 1/2in.
