A GERMAN SILVER-GILT SNUFF BOX WITH ENAMEL PORTRAIT AND EROTIC SCENE

Of oval form, the base, sides, hinge and thumbpiece chased with strapwork and flowers against a matted ground, the sides also with panels of animals and flowers, the cover chased with a scene of mythological figures and putti before a fountain within a border of scrolling foliage, shells and strapwork with four profile portrait medallions at intervals, all against a matted ground, the double cover opening to reveal an oval miniature portrait of a lady, set into the inside of the false cover opening to reveal a painted enamel scene of a young girl holding a love letter and being spanked by an older woman as as dog looks on and a young man watches, concealed behind the door, apparently unmarked--3 1/4 in. (8.3 cm.) long
