Lot Essay

Rodin met the Japanese dancer Hanako (ohta Hisa, 1868-1945) through the American dancer Loie Fuller in 1908. He was impressed byt he intensity of emotion he saw in Hanako's features, and at one time considered using a study of Hanako as the starting-point for a portrait of Beethoven.
