Lot Essay

This imposing example is slimmer and more elongated than most Igbo ancestor figures. The open mouth and sensitive treatment of the facial features also give it an intensity of expression not often found among these works. The eroded surface and old pigmentation may suggest that this is an earlier expression than that represented by the more common, fully pigmented figures that are generally known.
