Lot Essay

After an extremely successful painting career, Gérome turned to sculpture at the age of 54. In 1878, he won the Medal of Honor with his first bronze entered at the Exposition Universelle.

The present model is extremely rare. It was cast by the Siot foundry in a very limited edition and an example was exhibited at the Paris Salon in 1899.
