THE PRESIDENT INTERCEDES ON BEHALF OF TWO CHAPLAINS SERVING WITH THE UNION ARMIES

"You have had before you the question of relieving Chaplain [James] White by an exchange of places between him and Chaplain [Charles W.] Heisley of Philadelphia. Chaplain Heisley has served in the field two years, and besides has a family affliction which does not admit of his leaving. I shall be glad if Chaplain White can be obliged by sending to his place some other Chaplain on whom it would not be so hard as on Chaplain Heisley." From military records, there are indications that Lincoln's intercession bore fruit: Chaplain Charles W. Heisley resigned on 25 June (a week after Lincoln's letter to Stanton) and Chaplain James White in turn was discharged l4 July 1865.
